Publishing OER
30-second summary. Before publishing: (1) make sure you hold rights to every component, (2) choose a license, (3) label license and credits on the material, (4) publish in an editable format, (5) add metadata.
Six steps
- Inventory components — text, images, audio, video, questions: who made each, and under what license?
- Confirm ownership — work made as an assigned duty may belong to the school; check policies and get written consent if needed.
- Replace non-open parts — swap unlicensed web images for CC0/CC BY ones or your own.
- Choose a license (Licenses). Recommended: CC BY or CC BY-SA.
- Label it — license statement with deed link at the end, plus credits for third-party parts.
- Publish editable formats — besides PDF, provide DOCX/ODT, H5P, HTML or source so others can actually revise.
Checklist
- Every image/audio has a source and a compatible license
- No students' personal data (photos, names, work) without consent
- Full license statement, no extra restrictions conflicting with the CC license
- An editable version is available
- Metadata: title, author, grade, subject, license URL, date, language
AI-assisted materials
hoclieu.org uses a language model to draft materials. When publishing AI-assisted content: disclose AI assistance and human review; keep a human responsible for accuracy; note that in many jurisdictions (e.g. US Copyright Office guidance, 2023–2025) purely machine-generated output is not protected while human selection, arrangement and editing may be — so CC BY or CC0 is a simple, safe choice for reusers; and check for passages reproducing copyrighted textbooks.
Machine-readable license metadata
<link rel="license" href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/">
<script type="application/ld+json">
{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "LearningResource",
"name": "Fractions – Grade 4", "inLanguage": "vi",
"educationalLevel": "Grade 4", "license": "https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/",
"author": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Hoclieu.org" } }
</script>
For H5P packages, fill in License and Author in the content metadata.
For schools: an OER policy
Cover the default license for teacher-made materials (CC BY recommended), author credit, a shared repository, quality review, and handling of third-party content. (A policy template is planned for the next content round.)
